Day 7 - Huon Valley to Longford... then home

Image
I screwed things up a bit in the planning today and wasted a lot of time. Very annoying... but it's done. Move on. Initially I had listed several things south of Hobart that I wanted to check out. There were some caves right down south, and another peninsula walk that would take a couple of hours, and the Tahune Airwalk. But then I realised that I had to get all the way back up north to stay near Launceston for the night as I had to drop off the camper and get to the airport by 9:00am. That also meant trying to get there in daylight so I could more easily repack my bags and clean out the camper (I was quite well moved in after a week!). So I had to cull the list of places to see and things to do. And I culled without really consulting a map or thinking about how I could best use my time for the day. Annoyingly, this cost me about half a day. The one thing in southern Tassie that I didn't cull from my list (but should have if I was had thought about it) was the Tahune Adventures...

Day 6 - Richmond to Huon Valley (via Hobart)

13 March 2023 - Today was my Hobart Day.  First I cruised up to the Rosny Hill Lookout and got a bit of an overview of the city and surrounds. The above shots are overlooking the Derwent River and the Tasman Bridge, and south towards the ocean. Apparently in 1975 some of the supporting pylons of the bridge were severely damaged when a ship went off course while navigating under the bridge. The captain then tried straighten up and go through one of the narrower gaps, and proved that there was a good reason for the instruction to only use the central widest gap... The ship took out several of the supporting pylons and caused some sections of the roadway above to fall. 12 people lost their lives... 5 were motorists who failed to notice the gap in time to stop (it was a dark and foggy night) and plunged into the river. The other 7 were crew members of the ship. They were trapped inside when the ship sank. Anyhoo... The bridge was quite intact when I drove over it, although a huge gust ...

Day 5 - Port Arthur to Richmond

12 March 2023 - Hmmm... this morning I was bested by the weather. I had planned to go right to the southern point of the Tasman region, south of Port Arthur. I had read about a walk out to the Cape Raoul Viewing Point, and there were also another couple of interesting landmarks down that way... But I decided to skip all of them. I didn't have a lot of motivation to hike for 45 minutes each way, in the rain, to a lookout that would likely be surrounded by clouds... And I was tired! At least I had been lucky when they had allocated my camper site. I spent two nights at White Beach Tourist Park (my only 2-night stop) and my site was just outside the left edge of this shot. I could hear the ocean all night, which was a bit of a treat. 🌊🥰 There were a few breaks in the weather so I could get out and have a bit of a look around. This is Tasmans Arch: Then a short walk to a gulch that goes by the name of Devil's Kitchen: And my trusty camper followed me everywhere I went... A bit fu...
